Designing with Decorative Rugs

Are you looking to change to look of a room entirely or just brighten it up from its usually drab surroundings? A decorative rug can to just the trick. Area rugs are so versatile that they can adapt to any style of a home and take on many decorative purposes.

When designing a room, try and start with a decorative area rug, and then look for the other pieces such as furniture and draperies so that they all compliment each other. The area rug does not have to coordinate exactly but it should parallel the feeling of the room and style of furniture and other rugs in the area.

Recently we renovated our great room and without changing any of the furnishings, we witnessed how the whole area could take on a casual to a formal look depending on which of our two rugs we used. Generally though when decorating a room, the following combinations work well:

  • Delicate upholstery and drapery with formal and/or ornate rugs
  • Informal fabric patterns with casual, geometric rug weavings
  • Semi-formal surroundings work with either formal or informal rugs

The price of an area rug does not have to play a role in matching it to the furniture as long as they compliment each other in style. Inexpensive rugs will work fine with expensive furniture.

Be open-minded to the various decorative features that rugs have to offer. Rugs not only decorate a room from the floor, there are also rugs that can be used as coverings for tables or beds. And a delicate and decorative silk rug will look great hung from the wall. Let the many traditional uses inspire you to place rugs creatively throughout the house.

Rug Care

Vacuuming is probably more important for the prevention of moth development than the cleaning of dirt. The back of the rug should be vigorously vacuumed periodically and the front cleaned at least twice a month, of possible. [more on rug care]
